Last year on the campaign trail Democratic nominee Joe Biden said that he started his academic career at Delaware State University. After making the accusations, the university quickly distanced themselves from the candidate by saying that he was never a student there.
They said “Vice President Biden did not attend DSU,” said Mr. Holmes in a Thursday email. “However he was the Commencement keynote speaker in 2003 and , and during the former he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree.”
Now here is where it gets interesting, universities and colleges have the right based on academic integrity and student code of conduct issues to revoke someone’s degree.
According to the statement that was issued by the university, he received an honorary doctorate in 2013. Traditionally, if someone lies about their academic history or plagiarize portions of their academics they have the ability to have their degrees revoked.
As of now, it is not known if the university is investigating this and taking into consideration whether or not they should revoke the degree. What is interesting, is that prior to the story being released the President of the University Tony Allen was appointed to Biden’s transition team should he win the election in November.
Many individuals would say this looks like bribery. It appears that the candidate is trying to buy his freedom from the investigation.
The university has a history of allowing inappropriate behavior. They were one of the few universities that did not revoke the degree of Bill Cosby after he was convicted of being a sexual predator.
The university issued the following statement:
“It is unfortunate that the Washington Times never asked us to respond to Joe Biden’s comments at the October 2019 town hall in South Carolina. Watched in full context, it is clear that Biden was discussing his long association with Historically Black Colleges and Universities, not making a claim that he had attended Delaware State University. For three decades, first as US Senator and then as Vice President, Joe Biden has been our advocate and partner to such a critical extent that in 2016 the University awarded him an honorary doctorate.”
